Before committing to a purchase, here are five important things worth checking.
1. Ask For Inspection and Service Records
One of the first questions you should ask is:
“Do you have maintenance and inspection records?”
A machine with documented servicing history is often a safer purchase than one with little or no paperwork.
Inspection records can provide valuable insight into:
- Previous repairs
- Recurring faults
- Major component replacements
- Compliance history
If records are unavailable, proceed carefully.
2. Find Out When The Next Major Inspection Is Due
A machine may appear to be attractively priced, but that can change quickly if a major inspection is just around the corner.
Depending on the machine and its condition, a major inspection can involve significant labour and repair costs.
Before purchasing, ask:
- Has the major inspection been completed?
- When is the next one due?
- Is documentation available?
This simple question can save a costly surprise later.
3. Don’t Assume It Passed Previous Testing
This is particularly important for insulated EWPs.
Some machines can end up at auction or on the resale market after failing critical testing requirements.
While there can be perfectly legitimate reasons for selling a machine, buyers should always ask:
- Has the machine passed required testing?
- Are certificates current?
- Are there any known compliance issues?
Never assume that because a machine is operating, it automatically meets all testing requirements.
4. Inspect Wear Items Carefully
Pins, bushes, structural components, hydraulic systems and wear points can tell a very different story from the machine’s appearance.
A fresh coat of paint can make a machine look impressive.
Wear and maintenance history tell the real story.
If you’re unsure what to look for, having the machine independently inspected before purchase may be worthwhile.
5. Ask Why The Machine Is Being Sold

There are many legitimate reasons for selling equipment:

- Changing operational requirements
But understanding the reason for sale can provide useful context when evaluating the machine.

Experienced operators often focus on something else:

A machine that costs a little more upfront but comes with documented history and fewer issues can often be the better investment.
