What Is an EWP Major Inspection and When Is It Required?

Elevated Work Platforms (EWPs) are critical pieces of equipment used across construction, electrical and maintenance industries. Like any machine working under load and at height, they require regular servicing, but at certain intervals, a more thorough process is required: a major inspection.

A major inspection is a comprehensive assessment of an EWP to ensure it remains structurally sound, safe, and compliant with Australian Standards.

Unlike routine servicing, a major inspection involves:

  • Detailed structural checks
  • Inspection of pins, bushes and wear components
  • Hydraulic system assessment
  • Electrical and control system testing
  • Non-destructive testing (where required)
  • Full strip-down of critical components

For truck-mounted EWPs, this process is particularly important due to the additional stresses placed on the unit through travel, setup, and repeated use.

When is a Major Inspection required?

In Australia, most EWPs require a major inspection at 10 years from the date of manufacture, and then at regular intervals after that.

However, inspections may also be required earlier depending on:

  • Heavy usage or harsh operating conditions
  • Previous repairs or modifications
  • Signs of wear, damage, or fatigue

Staying ahead of these inspections helps prevent downtime and ensures equipment remains safe for operators.

Why Major Inspections matter.

A properly carried out major inspection:

  • Ensures compliance with Australian Standards
  • Identifies hidden faults before they become major issues
  • Extends the life of the equipment
  • Reduces the risk of breakdowns or failures
  • Keeps operators and worksites safe

For businesses operating truck-mounted EWPs, reliability and safety aren’t optional, they’re essential.
